Fire Island runs along and south of Long Island, separated from the mainland by Long Island’s Great South Bay.
Our house, 458 Ocean Walk (aka “Gibbon Hill”), is located in the community of Fire Island Pines: www.https://www.google.com/maps/place/458+Ocean+Walk,+Patchogue,+NY+11772/@40.667042,-73.057941,16z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x89e84acf2c1216f5:0xc26d813ea7930a3a?hl=en.
The Pines is ONLY accessed from Sayville Ferry Services in Sayville, NY.
To get to the Sayville Ferry, you can drive or take the LIRR railroad to the train station in Sayville (www.mta.info/lirr). If you’re driving, there’s parking right at the ferries. For those taking the train, the basic steps are:
-
Take the train from Penn Station to Sayville, NY. Before boarding the train, purchase your round-trip ticket. Determine if your rides are Peak or Non-Peak times, as the cost is different. Depending on the train, you'll transfer at either the Jamaica or Babylon station to the train to Sayville, which is almost always waiting just across the platform. Travel time from Penn Station to Sayville is approximately 90 minutes.
-
Take a shuttle van at Sayville Station to the Sayville Ferries. Van(s) are always waiting right by the train platform. This is a 5 minute ride and costs $5 (cash only).
-
Take the Fire Island Pines Ferry. At the Sayville Ferry Service Marina, there are departure points to four places on Fire Island. You want the ferry for Fire Island Pines. When you arrive, purchase your round-trip ticket ($16, credit cards accepted). Please note: when you board, they’ll take half your ticket. Keep the other half, which is your return ticket. Without it, you’ll have to pay for a return trip. Ferries run throughout the day and every hour or 2 on the weekends. The ferry ride is 20 minutes and takes you right into Pines Harbor, which is the commercial district of The Pines. To simplify your travel planning, consider downloading the free Fire Island Ferry mobile app which will show you the train and ferry schedules together. For quick reference, click here for the summer ferry schedule.
Our house, which is the eastern-most part of the Pines (heading left when you get off the ferry), is approximately a 15 minute walk from the Harbor. There are no roads or cars in the Pines. Everything is connected by wooden walkways. For anyone who cannot walk, there is a limited motor cart service available.
